Tummy Tuck with Dr. Burak

Tummy tuck can be defined as the treatment method applied to remove sagging that occurs around the abdomen and has a negative impact on the appearance of people in terms of aesthetics. The name of tummy tuck surgery in the medical literature is known as “Abdominoplasty”. The application of this operation is as follows; An incision is made under the belly button and the sagging skin is collected. If the upper abdominal skin needs rejuvenation, the location of the navel can be changed. Abdominoplasty changes the physical appearance of a person. It is also include as part of operations like Mommy Makeover.  Since this operation is a surgical procedure, it may carry some risks. If a person is smoking and consuming alcohol, or if daily exercise programs do not remove this saggy abdominal skin, tummy tuck surgery can be recommended. The waist line becomes fit and slim after a tummy tuck.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

While a tummy tuck is a transformative procedure, it is not suitable for everyone. Dr. Burak evaluates each patient individually, but generally, the ideal candidate meets the following criteria:
    • Stable Weight: You are at or near your ideal body weight. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can negatively impact your results.
    • Excess Skin & Weak Muscles: You struggle with loose skin or a “pooch” that resists diet and exercise, often caused by pregnancy or massive weight loss.
    • Non-Smoker: You do not smoke or are willing to quit at least 6 weeks before and after surgery to ensure proper healing.
    • Realistic Expectations: You understand that while the procedure contours your body, it is not a substitute for weight loss.
    • Completed Family Planning: For female patients, it is often recommended to wait until you are finished having children, as future pregnancies can separate the tightened muscles again.

    Types of Tummy Tuck Surgeries

Dr. Burak customizes the technique to your specific anatomy. Beyond the Mini-Abdominoplasty, there are two other primary methods:

    Full Abdominoplasty (Standard Tummy Tuck)

This is the most common procedure for patients with significant skin laxity.
    • Incision: Runs horizontally from hip bone to hip bone (usually hidden by underwear/swimwear).
    • Procedure: Involves removing excess skin and fat from the entire abdomen (upper and lower) and tightening the rectus abdominis muscles (muscle repair) to flatten the belly.
    • Navel: The belly button is usually repositioned to look natural with the new skin tension.

    Extended Abdominoplasty

Ideal for patients with significant weight loss who have excess skin wrapping around the hips.
    • Incision: Similar to a full tummy tuck but extends further around the flanks (love handles).
    • Benefit: Improves the contour of the waist and hips in addition to the abdomen.

    Partial Abdominoplasty
    (MINI-ABOMINOPLASTY)

Abdominoplasty is performed by removing excess skin in the middle or lower abdomen. With this application, the abdominal muscles are stretched and made stronger. It should not be forgotten that this operation is not a weight loss operation. In order for the surgery to take place, the patients are expected to lose a certain weight before the surgery. Saggy skin or navel problems are treated. However, after this operation, a scar remains in the abdomen.

There are many methods for performing a tummy tuck surgery. Tummy tuck surgery can also be applied together with body correction surgeries, that is, aesthetic breast surgeries, liposuction, etc. or some other surgeries, uterus, ovary surgeries, etc.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Journey: What to Expect

Recovery is a process, and Dr. Burak will guide you through every step. Here is a general timeline of what most patients experience:

Week 1: The Initial Healing Phase Rest is absolutely critical during the first seven days. You will be required to wear a medical compression garment around your midsection to minimize swelling and support your new contours. While you will experience mild to moderate discomfort, this is effectively managed with prescribed medication. It is important to begin walking short distances—even if you are slightly hunched over—to promote healthy blood circulation and prevent complications.

Week 2: Regaining Mobility During the second week, any surgical drains that were placed are typically removed by Dr. Burak. You will likely find that you can stand more upright as the tension in your abdomen begins to ease. Many patients feel comfortable enough to return to non-strenuous desk jobs or light office work at this stage, provided they avoid any heavy lifting or sudden movements.

Weeks 3–4: Returning to Daily Life By the end of the first month, your swelling will begin to subside significantly, allowing you to see the preliminary results of your procedure. You can safely resume most light daily activities and social engagements. However, the internal tissues are still healing, so it is vital to continue avoiding heavy lifting and high-impact exercise to protect the muscle repair.

Weeks 6–8: Full Activity and Final Results Most patients are cleared for full physical activity, including intense gym workouts and heavy lifting, by the second month. As the residual swelling continues to fade, your final abdominal contour starts to become fully visible. While your body will continue to refine itself over the coming months, this stage marks the point where you can fully enjoy your new, slimmer physique and active lifestyle.

    Tummy Tuck for Men

Abdominoplasty is not a procedure limited to women; it is increasingly popular among men seeking a more athletic physique. Male candidates often seek this surgery after massive weight loss to remove loose skin that hides their abdominal muscles. The surgical approach for men differs slightly from women; Dr. Burak focuses on preserving a masculine aesthetic, avoiding an hourglass shape. The goal is to flatten the chest and abdomen to highlight the pectoral and abdominal muscles, resulting in a straighter, firmer torso profile.

    Tummy Tuck for Women

For many women, the abdominal area is the hardest to tone, particularly after the physical stress of pregnancy or significant weight changes. A tummy tuck is often the centerpiece of a “Mommy Makeover,” addressing issues that diet and gym workouts cannot fix, such as stretched skin, stretch marks below the navel, and separated abdominal muscles. Dr. Burak’s approach for female patients focuses on restoring a feminine silhouette, emphasizing a tighter waistline and an hourglass contour. By removing the “apron” of excess skin and reinforcing the core muscles, the procedure rejuvenates the body, often helping women regain the confidence and figure they had prior to childbearing.
