Plastic surgery is not always about beautifying and modifying the body without any convincing reason. There are multiple factions of reconstructive surgery that deal with restoring the body’s functionality and appearance to normal after unfortunate events/conditions.

Tissue transplantation is a surgically invasive treatment that encompasses the transfer of tissue from a healthy body part to another damaged/deformed body part. In order for the transferred tissues to survive the transplantation, the surgeon combines the tissues, vessels, and in some special conditions the nerves using microsurgery.

People opt for tissue transplantation due to tissue deficiency and other varying conditions like: trauma, genetic deformities, diseases, organ failure, etc. It is possible to treat bones, soft tissues, and even intestinal tracts with this procedure.

When is Tissue Transplantation Necessary?

Necessary for cases involving any kind of tissue loss. Regardless of the circumstances that caused the tissue loss, the procedure is applied by replacing the lost tissues with their matching counterparts.

Examples regarding tissue loss can be explained in these 2 scenarios. When a breast is cut due to injury or cancer, the surgeon replaces the lost tissue by transferring similar breast tissue to the affected area.

The other example would be a person who sustained severe injuries to the face, especially in the lips and nose. The surgeon will similarly transplant matching facial tissues to the missing areas, and so forth.

Who Can Have a Tissue Transplant Plastic Surgery?

Tissue repair and transplantation can be applied to patients who lost organ functionality due to injury, trauma, or any other reasons. The lost functionality can be either partial or complete.

In particular, tissue transplantation can be applied in the following cases:

  • Burn marks and scars (Applicable for all degree burns.)
  • Electric shock
  • Trauma/Injuries/Accidents and other reasons
  • Apart from malignant tumors, the procedure is applicable to the loss of one or more tissues and/or organs

There is no minimum or maximum age limit for tissue transplantation. If the surgeon’s technique is sufficient and suitable for the transplantation, it can be applied to all age groups, including newborns.

What is Composite Tissue Transplantation?

Tissue repair surgeries are performed on patients who face the loss of multiple tissues. Such intricate and critical tissue loss disrupts the body’s integrity and causes severe damage. In simpler terms, the surgical procedure to revert the loss & weakening of body tissue functionality can be defined as composite tissue transplantation.

Such surgeries are applied in order to restore and sometimes improve physical form and body functions. The patients can expect a significant increase in their quality of life after the repairs are commenced. There are different types of tissue transplantation surgeries.
